That's entertainment! Reach African-American adults and teens with the SMSi Entertainment Network — a non-traditional approach to product sampling and distribution that can increase your market share among urban adults and teens by up to 40 percent.

For a variety of reasons, urban communities receive fewer samples than general market customers — on average only 5 percent. Because a high proportion of African-American and Hispanic consumers do not use traditional banking services, they aren't listed in direct mail databases. Direct mail samplers often avoid multiple-dwelling households to eliminate pilferage.

While there are other ways to spend the promotion dollar, at SMSi we know that ethnic sampling is one of the most effective. Because ethnic consumers get few samples, the ones they do receive tend to have a great impact. “Retailers have learned that sampling can significantly increase sales. No other component of a marketing plan even comes close to its effectiveness,” notes Sandra Miller Jones, founder of Segmented Marketing Services Inc. (SMSi).

Points of sweat
SMSi's marketing managers develop unique strategies for sample distribution at street fairs, festivals, sporting events and playing fields, parks, parades, and concerts. They reach students at events on college, community college, and university campuses. They distribute free sample packages at Historic Black College reunions and homecomings and at family reunions. They mingle with adults at popular nightspots, from clubs, music venues, and neighborhood taverns, to bowling alleys and racetracks.

Sample distributors — street teams — are from the local community. They speak the language of the community and can establish rapport easily with the people they meet. For special occasions, the y drive colorful, branded mobile units that attract attention and generate buzz.

SMSi executes cooperative programs (with category exclusivity) through the Entertainment Network twice a year. Solo sampling and distribution is also available.
